Finished...

Well, well my first finish of 2014!  I have finished small quilts for my "My Lazy Daisy" trunk show, but this is my first larger quilt finishing in the year 2014.  Mary Kay Kerr did the quilting on this 68inch X 60inch quilt. This quilt is heading down to Ft. Hood Texas, and a soon to be returning solider.

I ran out of the navy blue polka dot fabric for the binding, so thought that the red polka dot would work, and I must say I love the red polka dot binding! The left corner has the red polka dot, the rest is the navy blue polka dot.

Another close up of quilting
Mary Kay did a great job quilting this.  Now I'm off to work on my quilt show quilts.  Two and a half weeks until the show.  I've got one small and one large quilt going in the show.  The small quilt is almost finished.   The large quilt is still at the quilter, it's do able no worries.  She said it should be ready tomorrow, but the DC Metro area is waiting for another snow/ice storm, so more than likely won't get it until Tuesday.    Never mind, got a text from my "quilter" http://funfromatoz.com at 5pm this evening, and she has my finished quilt in her car, doing some running around then stopping by here to drop it off before the snow storm tomorrow!  Yippe! More binding and a little sleeve sewing for me.

Old Tobacco Road (Bonnie Hunter Mystery 2008)
This is not so wide, almost 80inches, but it is long 101inches.  Think this might be my new retreat quilt. You can find the free pattern here http://quiltville.com under Mystery quilts on the left sidebar.

I am totally ready for warmer spring weather, enough snow already, but if it's going to snow, at least I have something to work on.

Happy piecing,
Sheila

Retreating Fun

Well I'm home from another fun President's Day weekend retreat at West River Methodist Center.  http://www.bwccampsandretreats.com/WestRiver.html And oh the fun we had! A Safari retreat (dubbed Sew Fari retreat) was the theme this year, and cute animal print fabric was the fabric for retreat blocks.
One of the two Sew fari Theme Fabric blocks I made

Talented quilters creating a quilt for our quilt bingo in October.  Can't wait to see more of this quilt.  I made two retreat blocks, but didn't win.  Oh well, maybe next year.  Retreater's also made iron caddy's, Sock Monkey's, and pin cushions, a retreat mystery, and anything else they wanted  to work on.  It was four day's of sewing, eating, creating, laughing, late into the night's, and early in the mornings.  I didn't get there until Saturday morning since I had a date with my man on Friday night aka, Valentine's Day.  So when I arrived I was way behind, and needed to get right to work.

My first project was the Iron Caddy.  What a great thing to have!  It has handles, and folds up to carry my iron to classes, retreat's or Go2Sew, and can be used as an ironing surface once at class, retreat or "Go2Sew".  The fabric I used for mine is a piece I fell in love with the minute I saw it several years ago at Joanne's and bought 5 yards of it having no idea what I was going to do with it.  I still have plenty of it left over for maybe other sewing accessories?

Iron Caddy
I think it turned out great!  Next finish was this cute little cuddle kit by My Lazy Daisy.  This is a quilt as you go, but that minkey fabric is a little tricky to work with and sheds quite a bit.  But all in all I love the way it turned out, and I finished this project Sunday morning at 2:00AM!  Sleeping is over rated at retreat.
Grab n Go Baby Throw Order # 90016-C
This is a Solider Quilt for Charlotte's daughter's husband's fellow single solider's returning home from Afganistan in March.  Mary Kay will quilt it, then return it to me for binding.

Solider Quilt Top
I didn't make the pin cushion, or the sock monkey, and really wish I had.  Oh well, the Sewfari was a success, and we are all looking forward to next years retreat.

Spinning my rotary cutter wheel

I'm working on a few projects.  One with a deadline, the other's just for fun.  "What's Cooking" is My Lazy Daisy's currant challenge, and the deadline is a picture of completed quilt (quilted and bond) to My Lazy Daisy office by this Friday, January 31st.  So I will be quilting like mad this week!
Challenge Fabric's
Second, my guild is doing a swap so the half square triangles are my leader/ender project.

Squaring up HS to 4.5 inches
Third, Pat Sloan has a new "Globetrotting" block of the month on Facebook.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/QuiltWithPatSloan/ Block 1 is Washington DC, and because I live in the DMV area I thought I shoud quilt along with Pat.

Washington DC Block #1
Washington DC Block #2
Block #1 still needs a border around it, but I'm just not feeling it.  There isn't enough contrast between the purple's.  So last night I cut out new square's, and I'm hoping to get down to sew it together later today.  Hopefully that one will be better.

Fourth, my guild is making 37 quilts for soon to be returning single soldiers from Afganistan, and I pulled this out of my UFO's.  Maybe another border because it's only 49.5 x 58 inches right now, and I think it needs to be a little bigger.   I'll gladly donate it if the guild still needs it by March.

Soldiers Quilt 49.5 x 58 inches
So I'll be spinning my rotary cutter wheel for a much needed border for this one, and I'll be happily piecing/quilting down in my sewing room instead of braving the bitter cold outside my front door.

Variety is the spice of quilting!

Well hello, and Happy New Year, and welcome new hope's of finishing last years projects, and starting new projects.
Simply a Pleasure by Nicole Chambers
Table runner and 6 place mats (only four shown) for my DD & her fiance'.  Unfinished Christmas present #1, place mats need bindings, but since this picture was taken I have two with bindings on.  Woot!

And who in the state of Maryland doesn't love a table runner and place mats with crabs on it!

Bread and Butter Table Runner
My Lazy Daisy pattern SKU #50023-C complete kit.  Table runner for my Mother in Law.  Unfinished Christmas present #2, quilting, and binding need to be finished.
What's Cooking My Lazy Daisy Challenge
Now that the Christmas present's have been revealed I can start to work on the What's Cooking Challenge, and making 4 patch Green/Light leader and ender units for my guilds upcoming swap at the Wedensday, January 8th meeting.  I have 50 four patch units finished, and don't go back to work until Wednesday the 8th.  The pattern for this swap calls for 80 four patch units for a 60 x 60 quilt.  I think I will make it a little bigger so will try to make 100 four patch units (halfway there!).  But will be swapping the 50 units I have finished.  As a fellow quilter/blogger http://keepmeinquilts.blogspot.com Mary says, "Variety is the spice of quilting".

Guild Swap 4 patch units
Wishing all my readers a Happy and prosperous New Year, and happy piecing.

Christmas sewing and a couple sidetracks

Over the Bay Bridge, and through the towns to Rehoboth Beach we go!  Christmas shopping at Tanger Outlets with my man.
Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore, MD.
Beautiful day for a drive.
Before we got on the road, I got a little sewing done on my Mother in Laws table runner (aka a Christmas present, but I know she doesn't read blogs so it's all good).  Just one more border to sew on and it's ready to quilt and bind.

http://www.mylazydaisy.net/shop/productdetail.aspx?prod=50023-C
Bread and Butter table runner is a My Lazy Daiy kit that my Mother in Law really liked, but "doesn't like to Quilt", "Hine, Hint".  There are other things I am woking on, but can't show pictures.  Never know who is reading...

Tanger Coupons free to Military Members & their family members.
So as soon as we got to Rehoboth I had to go get my coupons.  Tanger give these books to Military members and family members for free, they also give them to triple A members.  Somehow today, we didn't use one coupon due to not spending enough to use the coupon, but the store did give a Military discount since we didn't spend enough.  It was a good day, shopping with my man, and getting some good deals in addition to no sales taxes in the state of Deleware.

So happy piecing, happy Christmas, and happy sidetracks for a little Christmas shopping.
